Unit 2 Discussion 1

Critical thinking is very important in the Information Security field.  When addressing a breach or a threat and protecting an organization’s data, the security professional must not only think like the hackers but must also be one step ahead.  For example, when a breach occurs the security professional will need to use critical thinking skills to assess the threat, identify solutions, and apply algorithmic skills.

In the case of the incident with the Big Retail Data Warehouse, a security professional could apply critical thinking by determining the source, confining the breach, and recommending remedial measures.  Due to the outside experts that are there to assist, the security professional would also need to assign roles and establish a communication plan.  In addition a statement will need to be prepared to explain the scope and information regarding the breach.

Critical thinking is: "political." The analysis, and opinion of any given situation, will always be biased. In theory, students can be taught, how to approach a piece of literature, and evaluate it critically (Hynd, 1999, p. 428). However, for fear that an offensive opinion, based on one's own politics-might, indaventantly construe a professor's grading pen, in the wrong direction, most American students, are no longer confortable (Hynd, 1999, p. 430).

Skills develop through hands-on-learning, and practice-that can begin in a classroom. However, hard-work, must be applied in the real world environment, and no just studied, and thought about as theory. When faced with a serious information breach, logging online, and copying another students response, to a similar situation-is not going to resolve anything. Critical thinking is: original, creative, and is ever evolving-it is the: "Confounding Factor," in "Game Theory"-what can never be predicted.

"Information is 'the new corporate currency,' and its management is the new corporate challenge" (Matwyshyn, 2010, p. 579). In a professional environment, such as the IT work place, handling information-is a critical thinking job. Thinking critically, must be constantly applied-not only to information and security breach problems, also to: maintaining, sharing, and creating new information. People used to say: "Time is money."
