Competency Required for IT Training: PMI Project Management Completion

Unit 8 Discussion 1 Response to Keating
Response from: Miss. Bayo Elizabeth Cary, AA, BA, MLIS
Costs of Failed Projects According to the Project Management Institute
(PMI),
74 percent of all projects come in over budget, run past original deadlines,
and ultimately fail every year. This statistic
leads to approximately
$75 billion spent on failed projects yearly
(source: Certification Magazine,
March 2003). (Info. Tech. Research Group, 2004, p. 1)
There
is a school, of research, that supports a specific academic field, that trains,
for IT project management, employment positions. I think, that the specialized
training, is necessary-not only experience. Too often, people, have no training
in a filed, from a formal academic environment, and, then pretend, as
though-they could handle the work-regardless. Below, is an information resource,
from an educational program, in London, UK-that specializes, in training
programs, for IT project management:
Action
Plan List the job expectations. Familiarize yourself with the tasks and duties
of the position before you hire the suitable person to perform them. What's
expected of a project manager
can vary between and within organizations. Have a look at Info-Tech's job
description for (http://www.infotechadvisor.com/jobbank/ descriptions/Project_Manager.doc) Project Manager to see common responsibilities
and position requirements. (Info. Tech. Research Group, 2004, p. 1)
It is frustrating, for individuals such as myself, who
are well-trained, and then, can find no employment at all, because those, who
are not qualified at all, are hired first. As an individual, who is
academically trained, I am not willing to work for free, or to complete another
student’s work. I work alone. I am never going to be, a: “Free Charlie Ride!”
Education, takes time, and money. To succeed at a University level, a
person, must think critically. When an individual has an education, and can use
what they have studied-it is evident. When a person, is in way-over-their-head,
because they have no academic training at all-that is evident, as well.
Educational training, is required, to work as an IT project manager:
Assemble
required skills set. Look beyond the straightforward qualities desired in
a project manager, such as
multitasking, critical thinking, organizational skills, and belief in a
structured process. See Info-Tech's ‘(http://www.infotechadvisor.com/solutions/
downloads/PMSkillsChecklist.doc) IT Project Manager Skills Tool’ for a more
comprehensive listing of sought-after project management skills and competencies. (Info. Tech. Research Group, 2004, p. 1)
I have worked hard in school, at a post-secondary
level, for over 20 years now, in: graduate, and PhD, studies programs. I am
eager, to complete my training. I am training, all the time, and, I have no been
hired, since: 2008-I know this is illegal. IT project management requires, more
than just a diploma-there, are certain competencies, which must be reflected,
by completed certifications:
Seek certification. Require project management certification
as a prerequisite for employment or advancement within your organization. Look
for certifications such as Project Management Professional (PMP) from the
(http://www.pmi.org/info/default.asp) Project Management Institute (PMI), and IT Project+
from (http:// www.comptia.org/default.asp) CompTIA as an indicator of
competency. (Info. Tech. Research Group, 2004, p. 1)
I am fluent, in
more than 1 language. I think, that the work required, for an IT project
manager, requires, more than a piece of paper. I have had to work, soo hard for
my degrees, and I owe soo much, that I am not willing to help others with their
homework, or anything else. Pay me!
A
project management position, in the IT field, requires, the correct
information, regarding communications techniques. I think that the days, of
distance correspondence, and successful project management-have passed. The
team, all need to sit together in the same room. Cellphones need to be turned
off. All those represented, are the only pay checks. If you are not in the
room, and if you are not specialized enough to participate, in an academic
conversation-then, you are just a: “fly-on-the-wall.” I study. I work. I am
sick of free-riders, and users. Help, if you are qualified, or-move-on.
